Downingtown West High School junior Drew Shelton, a heavily recruited offensive lineman, has verbally committed to continue his academic and athletic careers at Penn State, writes Joe Juliano for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Shelton received more than 20 offers – including from Michigan, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Florida, Minnesota, Stanford, Oregon, and Virginia Tech – thanks to his four-star ratings from Rivals, 247Sports, and ESPN.com.

He made his commitment to the Nittany Lions known last Friday on Twitter, where he wrote “I’M STAYING HOME! #WEARE22.”

“I chose Penn State because I have a great relationship with coach (Phil) Trautwein (offensive line), analyst (Ty) Howle and (head coach James) Franklin,” Shelton said. “It’s close enough to home where my mom and sister can come see me play and get back home for the night. I felt why would I wait when I know where I want to go, so I pulled the plug.”

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound player is rated the No. 3 prospect in Pennsylvania by Rivals and ESPN and No. 4 by 247Sports. Also, ESPN ranks Shelton as No. 97 in the nation.
