To help his family during the pandemic, Isaiah Bruce, a running back on the West Chester University football team, worked 60-hour weeks while tackling a full slate of online college classes … and still managed to earn the best semester grades he’s ever had, writes Neil Geoghegan for the Daily Local News.

Bruce, who lives in Upper Darby, came home to learn that his single mother, Alicia Lotary, had been laid off from her job. Around the same time, his brothers, Alex and Tichon, both lost their jobs.

With the family left with no income, Bruce realized he had to step up. He contacted the employer at his summer job to see if he could start a couple of months early.

He soon began working as a landscaper, often putting in 12-hour days, six days a week.

All of his free time – the little there was – was spent on college classes and studying. But after two months of craziness, he still achieved a 3.9 GPA for the semester.

“It’s a tremendous story,” said WCU football coach Bill Zwaan.
