Despite the pandemic that has been wreaking havoc on the restaurant industry, a new Philly Cheesesteaks opened in Berwyn earlier this month to the delight of local food aficionados, writes Caroline O’Halloran for SAVVY Main Line.
The eatery has ingredients that are a cut above, with ribeye steak sliced in house and all-natural chicken that contains no antibiotics.
Philly Cheesesteaks is owned by Alex Zaglol, a native of Egypt who moved to the U.S. to become a commercial airline pilot. But once he began working in restaurants two decades ago, he found his true passion.
In 2002, he opened Philly Cheesesteaks in Collegeville, but it closed following the sale of its building. He then opened a Royersford location in 2010.
Zaglol, who has been living with his wife and two children in Phoenixville for the past 15 years, signed a lease on the Berwyn location at the height of the COVID-19 shutdown in April.
He said that the pandemic gave him “more motivation to do this while everything was so negative.”
“I believe I can make something positive out of this,” he said. “I can always say I opened during the hardest time possible.”
