One Safe Harbor resident has gone down two pant sizes. Another has lost 22 pounds.
But weight loss is only part of their success story.
Safe Harbor of Chester County has partnered with Kinetic Physical Therapy to help its residents experiencing homelessness improve their health, build confidence, and develop long-term stable habits.
For the past year, Kinetic Physical Therapy’s Downingtown location has generously donated two fitness classes each week for Safe Harbor residents.
Led by trainers Gabe and Anthony, the classes provide structured wellness opportunities.
The Health Reality Behind Homelessness
People experiencing homelessness face health challenges that most people never encounter. Individuals without stable housing are three to six times more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory conditions than the general population, according to research.
Mental health challenges are equally prevalent. Studies indicate that more than 30 percent of people experiencing homelessness live with serious mental illness, and rates of anxiety and depression are significantly elevated compared to the housed population.
Physical activity effectively addresses both. Regular exercise reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, improves cardiovascular health, strengthens the immune system, stabilizes blood sugar, improves sleep quality, and builds self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
A Partnership That Is Making a Difference
The classes offer residents a chance to establish healthy routines, reduce stress, connect with others, and celebrate personal achievements.
Through regular participation, residents are discovering that small, consistent steps can lead to meaningful progress.
More Than Physical Fitness
The program also encourages consistency and accountability. By showing up each week and working toward personal goals, residents develop habits that support success in other areas of life. Every completed workout becomes another reminder that progress is possible.
Isolation is one of the most damaging and least discussed aspects of housing instability, separating individuals from the social connections that most people take for granted.
Shared wellness activities help foster positive relationships and a supportive environment where residents encourage one another, celebrate milestones together, and build a community rooted in mutual respect.
Gabe and Anthony bring enthusiasm, encouragement, and genuine commitment to the residents, creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and supported.
A Holistic Approach
The partnership reflects Safe Harbor’s broader philosophy that lasting stability requires more than a roof over someone’s head. Physical wellness is addressed alongside housing placement, employment support, and case management services, giving residents a fuller set of tools to build healthy, sustainable futures.
Through movement, encouragement, and community, participants are becoming healthier and stronger. More importantly, they are building resilience, confidence, and hope for the future.
