A year ago, Nina had lost almost everything. When she arrived at Safe Harbor, she was homeless for the first time in her life. She was carrying layers of trauma that left her feeling lost, overwhelmed, and disconnected.
She struggled with strained relationships, hidden substance abuse, and loss.
Nina questioned her own worth and whether she deserved a better future. Like many who come through the Safe Harbor doors, she was navigating not just the challenges of housing instability but the deeper weight of experiences that had shaped her life.
Over time, Nina began to rebuild, step by step.
Through consistent participation in Safe Harbor’s therapeutic day programming and her own commitment, she leaned into the support around her. She connected with other residents.
She began saving money and paying off debts. She worked intensively with her team.
Nina was active in mindfulness and gardening groups. She made the choice to attend intensive outpatient therapy each week, taking an active role in her recovery and even extending her program when she feared she wasn’t quite ready.
With each passing day, she began to get stronger and more confident.
After over a year at Safe Harbor, Nina successfully moved into her own apartment. Now she returns to Safe Harbor weekly to attend programs and volunteers to give back.
Recently, Nina celebrated 365 days of sobriety. She shares her story openly, using her experiences to encourage and support others.
Nina’s story is not over yet, but her future is very bright.
