New Downingtown West Football Coach Plans Another Year of Dedication and Growth

After ten years of assistant coaching, Tom Kline is set to match his debut coaching year with another successful season this fall.

Downingtown West High School head football coach Tom Kline has set the stage for another successful season, writes Gina Lizzo for Main Line Today.

After assistant coaching for ten years, Kline debuted as head coach last year. He led the team to a district championship win and a state semifinal appearance, the farthest that a Downingtown team has gone since 1996.

As he begins his second year as head coach, Kline has plans for continued growth for both himself and the team.

Kline shared that consistent dedication and rigor led to the team’s success. He would stay up until three in the morning after last season’s games to review the film and compare the team’s performance with their next opponents.

Kline would coach the team the following morning based on his review. He hopes this quick turnaround teaches the team the importance of constant preparation.

As for specific upcoming goals, he hopes to lead the team to winning next year’s state championship, a title which is typically swept by private schools.

However, above any scorecard or season record, Kline shared that building strong character both on and off the field remains a top priority for his players. He said, “We make this more of a bigger experience than just playing the game.”
