Former Downingtown West football star Drew Shelton has been excelling as left tackle at Penn State in his junior year, allowing just two sacks across 462 pass-blocking snaps this season, writes Devin Jackson for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Shelton has been a consistent presence on the offensive line, but has now adjusted his preparations to fit his role as “the guy.”
“We always talk about preparing like you’re the starter, and everyone always tries to do that, but it is a little bit different when you know that you are the first guy out there,” he said.
When first joining the team, Shelton had big shoes to fill, following starter Olu Fashanu, the New York Jets’ first-round draft pick. But he held his own throughout the season, even if his play style is different.
“Drew, to me, is a technician,” said offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. “Drew has to overcome what Olu had, which is power and strength; Olu could stop a bull rush with one finger. Drew has to have his hands in tight and inside. Drew has to be able to be technically sound on every single play.”
