Mike Milano, after being with Downingtown West since 2002, is now retiring.

Downingtown West’s Mike Milano, one of the most respected high school football head coaches in Pennsylvania, is retiring, writes Peter DiGiovanni for The Daily Local News.

The 69-year-old Milano came to Downingtown West in 2002 and has been the program’s only football head coach. During his 21-year history at the school, Milano achieved a won-loss career record of 211-131-1.

Milano is one of the longest-tenured high school head coaches in the state. Before he joined the Downingtown school, he was head coach at Penncrest and Unionville.

During his time at Unionville, he captured a District 1 title in 1993. He made the same achievement at Downingtown West in 2019. During his last season with the school, the Whippets reached the District 1 6A title game and compiled an 11-3 record.

“I’m still not sure if it’s congrats or condolences,” said Milano. “I love everything about high school football. It has been a 12-month commitment for over 30 years. It has been at the center of almost everything for me and my family. At this time, I just believe the time is here to step aside.”
