Downingtown High Schools Are Inexhaustible Source of Offensive Linemen for College Football’s Power Five
Downingtown has never had a shortage of offensive line talent as its high schools keep producing big-bodied standouts fully dedicated to the craft, writes Joey Piatt for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In the Downingtown East football program, Michael Matta has been prioritizing offensive linemen. Ever since he took over the program following the split of Downingtown High School in 2003, he has relied on a double-tight end, power style of offense where strong offensive line play is a must.
“We’ve emphasized offensive line and tight end more so than probably any other school in Pennsylvania,” said Matta. “When we do anything, starting with ninth graders, the offensive line always goes first.”
Meanwhile, Mike Milano has coached a variety of Division I players since he took over the Downingtown West program in 2003, but not many have been in the offensive line position. However, that has changed in recent years.
“Our line practices have been amazing for a couple of years now with the talent that we’ve had and the competitiveness of those kids,” said Milano.
Thanks to both programs now consistently producing Division I talent, the area has become a hotspot for recruiting this position.
