Lincoln University will mark the start of construction on its new 320-bed residence hall with the official groundbreaking ceremony set for next month, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
This is the largest of several development projects the university is currently undertaking. Lancaster-based Wohlsen Construction Company will lead the construction.
The four-story building will span 94,000 square feet, which will offer a much-needed upgrade to the housing stock at the nation’s oldest degree-granting Historically Black College and University campus.
To construct the new residence hall, the university secured a $59.5 million loan from the Rice Capital Access Program, which funds capital projects at HBCUs with the U.S. Department of Education repaying the principal and interest. Lincoln has allocated $43.4 million of the funds for buildout costs.
Many of the projects underway or planned at the university focus on the renovations of its historic buildings, with the new residence hall being a notable exception. Once completed, the building will be the campus’ second-largest residence hall, offering apartment-style living.
According to Yeda Auten-Arscott, Lincoln’s director of facilities and program management, the building is expected to be fully occupied by early 2027.
