Author and billionaire philanthropist Mackenzie Scott has recently made a remarkable donation of $25 million to Chester County’s Lincoln University, writes Frederick Sutton Sinclair for CBS News Philadelphia.
The university announced the donation last Friday. The funds will go toward scholarships and campus-wide initiatives to support students, faculty, and staff.
University president Brenda Allen spoke about Lincoln University’s legacy and the impact of such a sizable donation. Allen said, “This investment honors that legacy and propels us forward, enabling us to build on 171 years of excellence and innovation. It is a powerful affirmation of the enduring value of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.”
The donation comes as one of several donations by Mackenzie Scott, an early contributor to Amazon who was married to Amazon co-founder Jeff Bezos from 1993 to 2019, to HBCU’s across the country. Scott previously made a $20 million donation to Lincoln in 2020.
The country’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University, Lincoln University boasts a population of over 2,200 students. Scott’s donations, which now total $45 million, serve as the largest donations in the university’s history.
