When they could not find a home to settle down with their son, Kevin and Nadia Young decided to build their personal haven in West Chester, writes Terri Akman for The Philadelphia Inquirer. 

“We wanted low-maintenance, and an environmentally friendly home,” said Kevin. 

The couple, who own an online e-commerce company together, shared their vision with Matthew Moger, principal at MaMo Architects. He helped them design a lovely, 3,500-square-foot sustainable house with three bedrooms, a loft, and a full basement. They moved into their new residence in 2019. 

To make the home sustainable, the pair installed solar panels that provide 80 percent of their energy use. They also installed geothermal heating and energy-efficient appliances, as well as LED lighting. 

On their 13-acre lot, the Youngs planted 200 trees, 15 of which were fruit trees, and an ornamental native plant bed. They also added a garden where they grow vegetables. 

“We built this house as a home base, a place to settle down,” said Kevin. “We are only eight minutes from downtown West Chester, where you can eat out and walk around. But on our property we are out in nature.”
