For bird and environment lovers, there’s a program introduced by the Pennsylvania Audubon Council called Bird Town Pennsylvania that provides support to municipalities and residents looking to become more involved with the places they call home, writes Cheryl Kehoe Rodgers for The Daily Local News.

Typically, Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) or Park Boards in boroughs or townships adopt the program and spread the news throughout the community.

So far, nine new Bird Towns have been introduced since May 2022, making the total amount to 43 in the state. Easttown Township in Chester County is one of the most recent to have joined the movement.

“COVID increased the interest in birds and ‘staycations” said Heidi Shiver, Bird Town Pennsylvania President. “Bird Town helps facilitate this burgeoning interest through bird walks, lectures, native plant sales, and other events.”

Volunteers works with municipal leaders to restore habitats, remove invasive plants, reduce pesticide usage, reduce mowing to support habitat and wildlife, and more. Additionally, workshops and meetings are held throughout the year to provide information.
