Nestled on 20 acres of preserved meadows and woodlands, “Bough Haus” in Chester County is a striking example of sustainable modern living, writes Eileen Smith Dallabrida for The Hunt.
Designed by West Chester-based Archer & Buchanan Architecture, the home merges European timber-frame inspiration with Bauhaus principles of simplicity, function, and beauty.
The homeowners prioritized energy efficiency and natural materials, opting for a layout where all main living spaces, including the primary bedroom and bath, are located on the first floor. Large aluminum-clad glass doors and windows bring in natural light and offer sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, while promoting cross-ventilation.
Architect Benjamin Nia emphasized the seamless transition between indoors and out, with “covered porches, stone terraces and expansive decks” integrated into the design.
The home’s orientation maximizes solar gain, with a rooftop photovoltaic array and green roof that supports stormwater management and cooling.
Inside, warm textures like Douglas fir ceilings, maple flooring, and walnut waterfall countertops create a cozy yet modern atmosphere. Thoughtfully placed balconies and decks offer peaceful spaces to relax—especially the small west-facing deck off the home office, where the owners enjoy watching sunsets at the end of the day.
