Downingtown West High School wrestling coach Drew Breese is excited to see that girls’ wrestling is growing in popularity and is likely to be sanctioned by the PIAA soon, writes J.F. Pirro for Main Line Today

“It’s real,” said Breese, who currently has two girls on his boys’ wrestling team.

One of them, Sienna Landrum, a junior, has been a member of the varsity lineup for the last two years. She went 7-10 at varsity as well as 8-3 in junior varsity bouts a year ago.

“The PIAA has a lot of deep tradition, and it’s fought and fought us on this, then put up that ridiculous number of 100 teams,” he added. “I think they thought we’d never get there, but now that it’s happening, they’ll be forced to deal with it.”

Meanwhile, Breese has been doing his part in popularizing the sport among girls. Last fall, he held “try nights” in Downingtown that drew 30 new girls to wrestling.

Other local schools also have girls wrestling on boys’ teams, including five at Kennett High School
