Conestoga High Schooler Breaks 15-Year Title Drought for Wrestling
In Berwyn, Conestoga High School’s Hayden McLellan is the first Pioneer to win a title at the Class 3A Southeast Regional in fifteen years, writes Nate Heckenberger for PA Prep Live.
The wrestler beat Pennridge’s Talan Hogan in the finale for the 172-pound title.
“I feel like it was long overdue,” said McLellan. “I’ve always had the talent. Whether it was getting sick or not peaking at the right time, it just didn’t work out.”
During the first day of the tournament, McLellan won his 100th career bout in his second pin of the competition. He followed this symbolic milestone with a major decision in the semifinals. In the finale, he took an early lead and had turned it into a victory by the end of the match.
“My teammates and I did a lot of offseason wrestling,” said the senior. “It was a lot of coaches and a lot of specialized time to hone our attack.”
Conestoga also tied the school record by sending three athletes to the PIAA Championships.
