La Lupita encourages samples before purchasing, especially for some of its more exotic ice creams.

La Lupita Ice Cream Shop — a new sweet stop in Oxford — is ignoring fall’s chill to continue to offer more than 20 tempting flavors. Jane Bellmyer scooped this story for the Cecil (Md.) Daily.

La Lupita Ice Cream Shop opened its doors at 417 Market Street and has quickly become a local go-to for ice cream excellence.

The store is owned by Omar Sanchez and managed by his parents, Armando Sanchez and Rosa Lopez. It was named in honor of Lopez’s mother, Lupita, who loved ice cream.

The shop encourages customers to try the traditional fare, but also to experiment with its unusual flavors. Samples are available before making that final purchase decision.

The staff obviously has its favorites as well. For Lopez, it is mamey, a Mexican-Caribbean fruit. Sanchez, on the other hand, has a wider palate.

“I like mango, coconut, piñon, but my favorite is gansito,” he said, referring to the Mexican cookie-flavored confection filled with strawberry jelly and dipped in chocolate.

Even better news is that unlike many seasonal ice cream shops, La Lupita is open in Oxford year-round, seven days a week.
