Coatesville resident Maria Ines Guerrero, the Girls Program Coordinator for The Garage Community and Youth Center in Kennett Square, enjoys having a positive impact on the lives of youth, writes Lisa Dukart for Main Line Today.

“I always knew that I wanted to help others become more confident in themselves,” she said.

A native of Mexico, Guerrero arrived in the U.S. when she was 12 years old. While in high school, she worked with the Chester County Intermediate Unit, helping younger students in the Kennett Consolidated School District.

After graduation, she took a role at the Garage, where she is still serving as the Girls Program Coordinator, overseeing the organization’s Kennett Square and West Grove locations. Many of the 500 students who participate in the program stay with it from middle school through high school.

The program offers a variety of activities that range from help with homework to career and life skills.

“I’ve always told them that life is hard, and you have to learn to be OK with yourself, so you can grow and know where you want to be,” said Guerrero.
