NBC’s Today Show: When It Comes to the Weather, This ‘Forest Kindergarten’ in Kennett Square Is as Dedicated as the U.S. Postal System

Except for the “gloom of night” part, the Hickory Hill Nature School in Kennett Square steadfastly commits to the same mantra as the U.S. Postal System: Its outdoor classwork isn’t stopped by snow, rain, heat, or any other weather condition. The school’s “forest kindergarten” is al fresco all day, every day, no matter the weather, writes Chrissy Callahan for NBC’s Today Show.

The school was founded five years ago by Stacey Gummey and has seen a surge in popularity over the past year. At one point, there were 40 children on the waitlist in case one of its 12 spots opened up.

The weather has not proven to be an issue either, whether it be a snowstorm or summer heat. Gummey finds that the benefits of the experience of spending so much time in nature far outweigh any inclement weather.

“Children are very resilient,” said Gummey. “We all know that everybody says that all the time. Here, we really realize they’re resilient. But we have to start off warm. And we have to have the right gear.”

While outside, the kids are encouraged to explore the great outdoors and follow their interests.

“That’s a really key component of teaching style, I think, and also interest-based,” said Gummey. “So this is not teacher-led; this is child-led.”
