With the Duke football team having recently opened its season with a trip to Notre Dame, West Chester native Anthony Nash recalled for GoDuke The Magazine the critical role he played four years ago, when the Blue Devils earned their first-ever win on the road against the Fighting Irish.

Leading up to the game in September 2016, Duke had suffered two disappointing losses and the stakes were high, both for the team and for Nash.

“As a redshirt senior, I highlighted Notre Dame as a ‘money game,’” said Nash, a Rustin High School graduate. “No matter what, if I had a great game against Notre Dame, I would boost my chances of at least getting looked at for the NFL.”

Although the game did not begin well for the Blue Devils – the Irish jumped out to a 14-0 lead – it didn’t take long for the visitors to find their rhythm.

Duke won, 38-35, in large part to Nash’s six receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns. The latter score was a 64-yarder in the fourth quarter that tied the game at 35.

“Personally, it was like a storybook ending,” Nash said. “I had my 24th birthday, got into a doctoral program, and beat Notre Dame in South Bend.

“I am grateful that I could be a part of a historic victory for the program. It didn’t hit me until 2019, when Duke hosted Notre Dame, and I saw countless videos and photos of the touchdowns, celebrations and smiles we all had. It was a great experience.”
