Bishop Shanahan High School graduate Doug Costin, a defensive tackle for the Miami (Ohio) University football team, has been named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, writes Steve Helwick for SB Nation.

Established in 1995, the Bednarik Award is bestowed upon college football’s defensive player of the year.

Costin, a rising senior from West Chester, led the RedHawks in sacks last season with six, and he also produced 9.5 tackles for loss.

A second-team All-MAC selection in 2018, Costin is a disruptor in the passing game as well, having batted down nine passes in the past two seasons.

The 6-foot-2, 295-pound lineman, whose father played college football at West Virginia, is majoring in sport leadership and management.

Miami, which ended last season on a three-game winning streak and finished at 6-6, opens the 2019 season on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Iowa.
