TrailOff, a new free app created by Philadelphia artists, offers GPS-activated audio storytelling for 10 regional trails, including the Chester Valley Trail, writes Cassie Owens for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Although it was never intended as a relaxation app, TrailOff is actually well suited for these stressful times. It offers a nature activity that does not require a lot of people, just a pair of headphones.

“You know that thing that happens when you’re walking around a city listening to music, and it sort of feels like your story mingles with the world?” said Adrienne Mackey, one of the artists working on the app. “We actually kind of curated that experience on purpose.”

To produce the app, Swim Pony Performing Arts – founded by Mackey 11 years ago – partnered with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council. The artists were selected through an application process and then paired with a trail that they created stories or poems for.

The story for Chester Valley Trail – entitled “Where The Light Won’t Go” – was written by ari.

The app will launch on Sept. 16 as part of the Fringe Festival and will be free and accessible for a year.
