DISC is the universal and observable language of how a person does what they do. Consisting of four unique factors: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Compliance, DISC measures behaviors of an individual which includes how they communicate.

A person’s DISC style consists of a combination of all four factors, usually with one factor being more prominent than the others, making that the person’s primary style. I want to give you a few tips today on communicating with the four DISC styles according to my experience and the TTI SI DISC Ebook.

Those who have Dominance as a primary style are often blunt and to the point. When communicating with them be clear and specific and present facts logically and efficiently. Give them the freedom to make their own decision.

Those who have Influence as a primary style like to tell stories and are very animated speakers. When communicating with them talk about people and their goals, while allowing time for non-business social interaction.

Those who have Steadiness as a primary style are reserved and deliberate, yet non-confrontational and friendly. When communicating with them show sincere interest in them as people. Listen and be responsive and provide assurances. Be sure to give them time to respond.

Those who have Compliance as a primary style are direct communicators, seeking as many facts as possible. When communicating with them be prepared with all your ideas and facts laid out in a logical fashion and make sure to give them their space, both physically and regarding time to complete a project.

As I have discussed over the past few weeks, self-awareness and awareness of others is fundamental to effective communication. DISC is a tool business leaders and their teams can use to improve that awareness throughout the organization which will facilitate collaboration and increase engagement.
