After collecting nearly 2,000 giraffe figurines over several decades, Wendy Harris of Unionville is now planning to see one of the majestic creatures in its natural habitat in Africa, writes Ken Mammarella for the Chester County Press.

Harris’s collection encompasses giraffes in every color of the rainbow. They can be found in nearly every room of her home and are made out of a wealth of media.

Her hand-written inventory currently lists 1,400 figurines, but she estimates the number will hit 2,000 once she has everything recorded.

As far as why she collects the giraffes, the answer is simple.

“They’re fun. They’re funky,” she said. “I can’t own one. That’s why I collect them.”

Her collection started with a gift from her father when she was a baby. When she first saw one in person as a seven-year-old in the Bronx Zoo, she was in complete awe.

To this day, though, she has not seen one in the wilderness, which she plans to change soon with a safari that includes breakfast with giraffes.

“It’s on my bucket list,” she said.
