Wellness Wednesday: Self-reflection During Lent

By

by Jaime Lynn Curley

Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season for many Christians to deepen their spiritual lives in preparation for Easter.  Lent is a time of self-examination and reflection and it occurs during the 40 days leading up to Easter.

Growing up I used to give up something I loved, candy, chips or TV. As a young adult, I would use the season to give up the foods I knew were causing me to gain weight in the winter months.

Although this strategy is still used by many, I prefer a different approach.  The belief is that constant participation in certain practices (like exercise and healthy eating habits) will improve our spiritual health.

I polled my Facebook community to see what my Christian friends traditionally do for Lent and I got some really good ideas.  If you are looking to use this time to self reflect and make an impact, here are my top 10 tips!

  1. Do a service project with your community
  2. Be more proactive in charitable giving
  3. Take on a project and use your spare time wisely
  4. Give one thing away a day
  5. Pick one unnecessary expenditure that you will fast from during this time
  6. 40 acts of kindness
  7. Fast from gossip & insensitive conversations
  8. Call 1 person a day and tell them how much they mean to you
  9. Spend a weekend volunteering
  10. Throw away or donate 40 things in 40 days

Please share with me what you plan to do this Lent season.  And be sure to follow me on Facebook Jaime Lynn Curley to participate in future polls.
