Wellness Wednesday: Brain Health

When we think about wellness we think about our physical body, but what about our brain?  As we age, so does our brain undergoing changes in size and composition.  Our physical lifestyle and nutrition plays a big role in how our brain ages.

The good news is, the food you eat plays a part in keeping your brain healthy.  There are many foods that keep your brain functioning at a higher level.  Here is my list in order of personal preference of course!

  1. Dark Chocolate; due to cocoa powder’s rich content of the antioxidant flavanol, dark chocolate can boost your mode, vision and brain performance. It also supports your brain against oxidative stress.
  2. Coffee; caffeine improves short-term memory and is also know to relieve headache pain.
  3. Nuts; studies show people who eat nuts regularly have a sharper memory due to brain boosting nutrients.
  4. Broccoli; packed with plant compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects.
  5. Eggs; rich in choline your brain uses this Vitamin B like nutrient to help maintain memory and brain cell communication.

I indulge in an amazing decadent dark chocolate every night after dinner.  It is infused with green tea extract, amino acids B vitamins, minerals and with all the benefits of cocoa, I enjoy it guilt free!

To maximize the benefits of these brain-boosting foods, mix a handful of nuts with some dark chocolate while sipping on a cup of coffee.  Or make a broccoli omelet for lunch! You are what you eat!
