West Chester native and Malvern Prep graduate Alex Hornibrook, a redshirt sophomore and quarterback of the undefeated Wisconsin football team, ate 6,000 calories a day during the offseason in an attempt to increase his durability on the gridiron, writes Jesse Temple for Land of 10.

In December 2016, Hornibrook’s lean body mass registered at 162 pounds. Seven months later, after a 6,000-calorie, clean-eating diet, his lean body mass increased to 173.7 pounds. In the same span, he decreased his body fat percentage from 20.43 to 14.7, nearly a six percent drop.

“The goals that I set nutrition-wise, they were pretty lofty,” Hornibrook said. “I don’t know if they were unattainable, but they were pretty close to unattainable. Even though I didn’t get exactly what I wrote down (10 percent body fat), I still did a lot more than what I thought I would be able to.”

Hornibrook’s adherence to a meal plan devised by the football team’s assistant strength and conditioning coach and sports nutrition consultant has translated to more success on the field this fall.

The Badgers are currently 10-0, ranked fifth in the nation by The Associated Press, and right on the cusp of a berth in the four-team College Football Playoff. Hornibrook’s completion percentage of 64.1 is up almost six percentage points from last season, and he’s already thrown for 17 touchdowns.

“Every day, we have the time we’re supposed to eat, we have the calories and the nutrition facts for the all the foods that are being given in here,” he said. “So if you want to take it and run with it, you can do everything you want to do. The tools that this whole team has are pretty great.”
