Proving that it’s never too late to chase your dreams, Kennett Square resident Mary Jean “Tangerine” Bell has published her first book of poetry at the age of 94, writes Dara McBride for the Cecil (Md.) Whig.

The nonagenarian published Tangerine: Poems at 94 with encouragement and help from her family, and has already managed to sell around 100 copies locally and on Amazon. Now, she’s working on volume two.

Bell said she got interested in poetry when both she and her late husband Jim retired a little more than 30 years ago.

Her writing has a unique sense of humor and style, and includes various types of verse, such as touching poems about family alongside “silly little rhymes.” She said people seem to especially like the rhymes.

“The great favorite of the rhymey dimeys is ‘Virginia State Motto’ — Virginia is for lovers, of course that is true, but if you find the proper partner, any state will do,” she said.

Now that she has published her first book, Bell is simply gravitating toward whatever captures her attention.

“I’m exceedingly erratic,” she said.
