You Didn’t Build It Alone, Show Some Gratitude

How did you survive the Blizzard of 2016? The conversation I had with my last client on Thursday focused on slowing down and enjoying the snow, peace, and quiet. And then, of course, reality sets in that we actually have to do something with all that sparkly white stuff we see outside the window.

Neighbors helping neighbors has always been a part of the block where I live. This blizzard proved to be the same. People were out at the same times and chatting with each other.

Someone plowed the driveway of an elderly woman, another helped a law enforcement family, and still another neighbor helped a single mom keep her snow blower running. I took a moment to focus on that.

Yes, it felt frustrating to be outside again shoveling snow. But how peaceful at the beginning of a long week to see people sharing kindness.

Marcandangelhacklife is a blog that helps me focus my perspective on a daily basis. They sent this quote, and I thought it suited the week. “There’s no such thing as a self-made person. Someone else believed, encouraged, and invested in you. Be grateful and be that someone for others.”

Showing kindness to others helps us breathe. And we don’t have to wait until they show us kindness first.

Someone posted on Facebook that if you saw a snowplow driver at a diner or drive-thru pay their bill. They worked hard this weekend. I would like to add any law enforcement, EMT, or fire personnel. Rough weather means they work extra.

Once you get into your workplace and settled, reflect on the above quote. Who invested in you? Maybe call them and say thank you. And, then, how can I pass that investment along? With a sincere thank you, or “how can I help you?” Patience training a new employee. Understanding when parents come in late because school was delayed.

Showing kindness to others helps manage stress. It helps us slow down and breathe. It gets all those endorphins flowing and many times there is no cost. Who can you show kindness to today?
