While a major energy company itches to get liquefied natural gas flowing through its proposed new Mariner East pipeline, Chester County residents are trying to turn up the flow of information.

Sudden negotiations over the land on which a new Sunoco Logistics pipeline — or two — will carry the precious energy source to its Marcus Hook refinery has roused landowners in nine Chester County municipalities, according to a Philly.com report.

The talk at numerous meetings has primarily revolved around safety concerns, the fairness of easement offers and landowners’ rights.

The Chester County Planning Commission recommends “landowners should consider the impact on their property, the compensation they should receive for use of the land, any potential impacts from the pipeline, and whether the pipeline company is willing to pursue eminent domain,” the article noted.

Though Sunoco Logistics spokesman Jeff Shields said the forced takeover of land through eminent domain is “really a last resort as far as we’re concerned,” it is nevertheless a possibility if land agents can’t strike a deal with landowners.

“Our recommendation to the landowners at this point is that it’s very premature for anyone to sign an easement agreement,” Pipeline Safety Coalition Executive Director Lynda Farrell said in the article.
