Kennett Area Women Not Letting Age Stop Them from Hand-Making Gifts for Avondale Kids
Irene Kalman and Anne Humes are not letting their ages of 104 and 95, respectively, stop them from making the holidays better for the children at Tick Tock Early Learning Center in Avondale, writes Fran Maye for The Daily Local News.
Last week, they delivered hand-made scarves and sweaters to the center where many of the children come from low-income families.
“It’s so special,” said Susan Czrewin, Tick Tock Early Learning Center director of operations. “Anne walked in here herself and delivered them.”
The sweaters have yarn colors with buttons designed like flowers, cars, or soccer balls.
“These are one-of-a-kind sweaters you can’t get anywhere,” she said. “Plus, they are made with love.”
Humes and Kalman have been making sweaters for kids aged three to five for years. It takes the women, who live in the Kendal-Crosslands retirement community in Kennett, most of the year to make them. The mothers receive scarves as a gift from their kids.
“Every year that they come in, it gives me the chills,” said Czerwin.
