AMETEK of Berwyn is continuing to solidify its position as a global manufacturer of electronic instruments with the purchase of two more firms, AMPTEK, Inc. and Luphos GmbH.

That’s four acquisitions so far in 2014 for Ametek, which says it is expanding its presence into several market segments, including bench top and life sciences applications.

AMPTEK, of Bedford, Ma, has annual sales of $30 million.  It’s a privately held provider of x-ray detectors used to identify material composition with x-ray fluorescence.  The detectors are used in metal, environmental monitoring, petrochemical, semiconductor and research markets.

“Amptek provides us with attractive sensor and detector technology as well as strong R&D development capabilities which will help to accelerate future technology developments for our served markets,” said Frank Hermance, AMETEK chairman and CEO.

Luphos GmbH is a German firm that provides non-contact metrology technology used to give highly accurate, nanometer level measurements of complex aspherical lenses and optical surfaces.

“The acquisition of Luphos provides us with exciting technology which is highly complementary to our Taylor Hobson and Zygo dimensional metrology businesses,” Hermanace said.  “This technology expands our metrology capabilities across a wider range of measurement applications and profiles thereby providing our customers a broader product and technology portfolio to serve their measurement needs.”

Purchase prices were not disclosed in the Aug. 5 news release.  Earlier this year AMETEK purchased VTI Instruments for $74 million and Zygo for $19.25 per share in cash.  Last yearAMETEK had sales of $3.6 billion.
