In Rare Suburban Move, Tredyffrin Office Complex Being Converted to Apartments

An office complex at 435 Devon Park Dr. is being converted into apartments.

An office complex in Tredyffrin is being converted into 162 apartments in a rare suburban project that could signal a new direction for redeveloping vacant office space, writes for The Philadelphia Inquirer

While many vacant office spaces in the suburbs have large dark interior areas, the eight-building complex is far better suited for conversion, according to Mark Thomson, founder of Love Communities, which is developing the project with E. Kahn Development and Triple Crown Corp

“It’s going to be the largest garden-style suburban conversion in the whole Northeast, maybe even a bigger area than that,” said Thomson

Built in the 1980s, the Tredyffrin complex avoided the standard big glass box model and instead featured two-story, L-shaped buildings with windows that open.

“The most expensive part of construction is the windows,” he said. “If we had to do that, it would probably make this not economically feasible.”

The 162-unit project will consist mainly of studio and one-bedroom apartments, both to alleviate concerns about potential strain on the school district and to provide affordable housing that is not subsidized in the affluent township.
