West Chester Golf Legend Reflects on Philly Sports as PGA Championship Takes Off

As the PGA Championship comes to Delaware County, West Chester's Jim Furyk is sharing his thoughts on his hometown’s passion for sports.

As the 2026 PGA Championships come to Delaware County, golf legend and West Chester native Jim Furyk is sharing his thoughts on his hometown’s dedicated sports fans, reports Pat Gallen for CBS News Philadelphia.

This year’s PGA Championship will continue this weekend at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square. With one of the nation’s most prominent golf championships coming so close to home, local sports fans—with their passionate cheers and boos—will take the national stage.

Furyk, a world-renowned golfer and 2027 Ryder Cup captain, is well acquainted with Philly sports fans’ enthusiasm. Ahead of this weekend’s events, he spoke about this year’s teams.

Furyk expressed his love for the Sixers, especially amid this year’s difficult season.

While he’s a fan of the Sixers, he split his childhood between West Chester and Pittsburgh, giving him simultaneous allegiance to the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins.

Beyond loyalty to any one team, Furyk still admires the region’s sports culture, noting how many Phillies fans showed up for the team during their World Series win.

Speaking about the region’s sports fans, he said, “You’ve got to give them credit because they’re passionate either way…they do love their city, and they do love their sports teams.”
