Memorial Day weekend in Chester County feels like the unofficial start of summer. Nevermind the forecasted rain.
American flags line borough streets, brewery patios fill with crowds, kayaks return to the water at Marsh Creek, and families gather for traditions that have existed in the region for generations.
As the nation marks its 250th anniversary this year, Chester County finds itself at the center of something bigger than a 3-day weekend. This is a place where the Revolution was fought on county grounds, where Washington crossed nearby rivers and soldiers camped through brutal winters.
From patriotic parades to outdoor adventures, here are some of the most popular ways Chester County spends Memorial Day weekend.
For many residents, the holiday begins with a parade. In Malvern, the annual Memorial Day Parade on Sunday carries its own distinction. It is widely recognized as the oldest continuous Memorial Day parade in America, meaning it never stopped for anything.
Meanwhile, others head to Longwood Gardens, where Memorial Day weekend is during peak spring bloom season. The gardens, fountain shows, and outdoor displays make it one of the county’s most visited and most photographed destinations.
The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is another staple, returning for its 130th year. It runs May 20 through May 31 at the Devon Show Grounds and draws over 120,000 visitors annually. On Memorial Day, the show hosts its Tribute to Heroes ceremony, offering free general admission to military personnel and first responders.
Outdoor recreation takes over the county as well. Marsh Creek State Park fills with kayakers, paddleboarders, and hikers making their first summer outing of the year. Boat rentals are also available at the park. Just be sure to check the weather.
West Chester comes alive as restaurants expand onto sidewalks and patios, rooftop bars draw long lines, and its walkable streets fill with people who just want to be outside.
And then there are the history sites! Brandywine Battlefield and Paoli Battlefield are the places where the outcome of the American experiment was uncertain, and soldiers died on Chester County soil for something that had never been tried before.
Visiting them on Memorial Day weekend 2026, the 250th anniversary of that experiment, carries a weight worth shouldering.
Of course, some of the lasting traditions require no planning at all. Backyard cookouts, fire pits, neighborhood gatherings, and time spent with family and friends remain at the heart of Memorial Day in Chester County.
