West Chester Pitcher Makes History with Final Season at WCU

WCU pitcher Julian Costa’s final season at WCU has included several remarkable feats, including a league record of two no-hitter games.

Baseball pitcher Julian Costa’s final season at West Chester University has included several history-making feats, writes Mia Messina for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

This season, Costa boasts a 7-2 record and a 1.09 WHIP (“Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched”). As captain for his final season, he’s led the team with a cool confidence, with coach Mike LaRosa describing him as “truly unfazed by anything.”

Notably, Costa’s career includes two no-hitter games, the most by any player in the history of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. He cinched one no-hitter last year, becoming the first pitcher to do so since 1947, and the second just last month.

Several weeks later, Costa continued his history-making final season with his 243rd strikeout, breaking WCU’s career strikeout record.

A graduate of Clearview Regional High School in southern New Jersey, Costa played first base and pitched in his first two seasons at WCU. Following his second year, coaches shifted the left-handed player to a pitching role only.

Now, having refined his nutrition, stamina, and body mass, the star pitcher is closing out his college career by inspiring his fellow teammates. He’s just one victory away from tying the current career win record of 30 games.

“From coming in as a freshman, wide-eyed, thinking he can conquer the world, to now, he is conquering the world,” said LaRosa.
