Brandywine Museum of Art Collaborates with Maine Museums to Highlight Overlooked Wyeth Designer

The Brandywine Museum of Art will partner with two Maine museums to highlight the work of designer Betsy James Wyeth in an upcoming exhibit.

A collaboration between three museums will highlight the work of landscape designer Betsy James Wyeth in an upcoming exhibit series, writes Peter Van Allen for Mainebiz.

Described as an influential but often overlooked member of the Wyeth family of artists, Betsy was married to Andrew Wyeth and the mother of Jamie Wyeth. A creative in her own right, Wyeth was responsible for restoring and reusing historic buildings, the architectural design of new structures, interior design, and environmental design in both Maine and Pennsylvania, much of which inspired her husband’s paintings.

Now, Betsy’s unsung contributions to the art world will be on full display through the exhibition “By Design: The Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth.”

Three collaborating museums will host the display concurrently: the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, the Colby College Museum of Art, and the Farnsworth Art Museum, with the latter two being in Maine.

The Maine exhibits honor the Wyeth family’s connections to the region and the landscape design Betsy influenced there.

Betsy’s first home design project took place at Broad Cove Farm near Rockland. The nearby Olson House, which Betsy also acquired and restored, served as inspiration for Andrew Wyeth’s famed painting “Christina’s World.”

The upcoming exhibition will include archival materials, still imagery, and physical interior design items for an immersive multi-media experience. For Chester County residents, the display will open at the Brandywine Museum of Art on June 27 and will run through January 2027.
