Artist Karl J. Kuerner – a Chadds Ford native and Wyeth disciple – shares wisdom, advice, and life lessons in his new book, Beyond the Art Spirit: The Mentoring of a Young Artist by Carolyn Wyeth and Her Brother Andrew, writes Lisa Dukart for Main Line Today.
Kuerner’s connection to the Wyeths runs deep. He studied under Carolyn Wyeth for seven years, while several of Andrew Wyeth’s paintings were created at or around his family’s farm.
The first-time author was prompted to write his book by West Chester artist Philip Jamison.
“We’ve known each other for years, and he said to me, ‘If you don’t write this, it’s going to be a whole lost era that people don’t even know about,’” said Kuerner.
The lessons he gathered from the Wyeth siblings still influence his own teaching, prompting him to always be an encourager.
“You never want to teach somebody to emulate what you’re doing,” he said. “You have to work with them to be a pioneer, to make some self-discoveries, and (know) that there’s no right or wrong way.”
