Kennett Square’s Mezzaluna Wood Fired Pizza has been named one of the best pizza shops in the world, writes Justin Heinze for Patch.
The recognition comes from the annual International Pizza Expo, a yearly contest that judges hundreds of pizzerias around the world in a category-specific competition. This year, over five hundred restaurants competed, a majority of which are based in Italy.
Mezzaluna ranked third overall in this year’s “non-traditional” category, which features no restrictions on dough, toppings, or styles.
In the non-traditional category, Mezzaluna placed third out of 110 finalists from around the world. The shop also placed first overall in the northeast division preliminary competition.
Mezzaluna was not the only Pennsylvania pizza shop to achieve this international recognition: Pizzata Pizzeria in Philadelphia earned second place in the pan division finals, with five other shops throughout the state earning titles at the expo.
Mezzaluna chef Benjamin Tobin shared his excitement at the international honor from the Pizza Expo, stating, “It was such an honor to not only compete alongside hundreds of pizza makers from across the country and from all over the world, but to also get to know some of the best pizza makers in the world.”
