Beloved Kennett Square sandwich spot Sam’s Sub Shop is celebrating eight decades in business, writes Joan Holliday for The Daily Local News.
Multiple generations of family members have kept the shop a family-owned operation for its eighty-year history. Owners Sam and Virginia Frabriso first began the shop in 1946, when the shop would open at 5 AM to serve breakfast to Kennett mushroom farmers.
Now, daughter Sandy Bertrando and her husband Bert serve as the managing owners. Sandy decided to carry on the business tradition after her father sadly passed.
Sandy’s son Michael travels all the way from New York City to help out at the shop on weekends. A successful actor, Michael recently appeared in Task, the HBO series created by fellow Chester County native Brad Ingelsby.
The menu features delicious subs made on homemade rolls delivered daily. Sandy shared that Sam’s Sub Shop has always prioritized fresh ingredients as well as healthy portion sizes.
Menu items include timeless staples like breakfast sandwiches and Italian subs, in addition to creative new options like the cheesesteak “Con Todo” topped with fried onions and jalapenos.
While some elements may have changed, the shop remains a reliable staple for regulars and newcomers. About managing such a longtime Kennett establishment, Sandy said, “Our shop is a place for old and new to meet each other and experience a sense of belonging to the community. I really enjoy that process.”
