Chester County Athletes Pioneer Girls Wrestling Statewide

Since PIAA’s official addition of Girls Wrestling in 2023, local athletes have paved the way for future generations of female wrestlers.

Female athletes are making history throughout Chester County as they dominate Girls Wrestling in its earliest PIAA seasons, writes Nate Heckenberger for The Daily Local News.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) finally sanctioned Girls Wrestling in 2023. For a generation of female wrestlers who grew up wrestling boys, the PIAA sanction provides invaluable opportunities for tournaments and medals like never before.

For the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years, 280 schools compete in Girls Wrestling. Wrestlers throughout Chester County have dominated finals in the last two years, and have made new friends along the way.

Downingtown West wrestler Sarah Pearson shared that she loves making new connections at each tournament. Pearson reached the finals last year in what was her second ever wrestling season.

Bishop Shanahan wrestler Shannon Logue placed seventh in last year’s state finals. Coatesville competitor Jaylynn Reeder also qualified for states last year.

In addition to individual competitors, wrestling teams also continue to grow. Kennett High School boasts twenty-four girls on their team this year.

But the significance of the new PIAA category means more than just awards. Chester County wrestlers shared that it has been an honor to pave the way for a new generation of female wrestlers to have access and opportunities moving forward.

About making this history, Owen J. Roberts wrestler Raylyn Schwoyer said, “I’m really proud and excited that I get to be part of the start of girls’ wrestling. And the future of it.”
