Kennett Community Grocer Secures Space for In-Person Community-Owned Grocery Store

After eight years of growth, the Kennett Community Grocer team finally signed a lease for an in-person food co-op to be opened next year.

After eight years of growth, Kennett Community Grocer finally signed a lease for an in-person food co-op to be opened next year, writes Joan Holliday for The Daily Local News.

The new 3,000 square-foot space is located at 625 E Cypress Street within Minnie’s Square shopping center in Kennett Square. The team shared a target opening date of May 2026 for in-person shopping.

The shop will offer high quality dairy, meats, baked goods, and shelf-stable goods, in addition to prepared foods. Plans for the space also include a beverage bar and several high-top dining tables.

The co-op-style space benefits both farmers and shoppers. Local farmers will be provided a permanent marketplace, and shoppers can find high-quality, sustainable groceries year-round.

Under the space’s consignment process, farmers receive 70 percent of proceeds, and the other 30 percent goes to Kennett Community Grocer.

This transparency between growers and consumers will continue to flourish with an in-person space where shoppers can regularly meet with and learn from farmers.

With a new home on the horizon, the Kennett Community Grocer team still needs support to complete the space renovation. The organization is continuing their “Build the Store Together” campaign, where supporters can contribute monetary donations or sponsor a piece of equipment for the store.
