Kennett Community Grocer plans to introduce a new way of grocery shopping in Kennett Square, writes Joan Holliday for The Daily Local News.

The co-op organization is looking to open a consignment-based grocery shop that would offer grocery items from community farmers. The storefront would offer local dairy, meat, and produce in addition to prepared foods, all provided by the surrounding community.

In addition to just groceries, the space will also feature a member benefits program, membership voting rights, as well as community events and workshops.

Kennett Community Grocer currently boasts 476 founding member-owners and connections with 80 local farmers. According to current plans, the co-op hopes to open the in-person storefront in May 2026.

Leading up to the opening, a recent board meeting included several leadership transitions. The new board will feature Angela Wagner as president and Stu Mundth as vice president, among other board changes.

Member of Kennett Community Grocer Edie Burkey spoke about the significance of local, community-based grocery shopping. Burkey said, “We are proud as a member-driven food cooperative organization to be able to come together and provide opportunities for our farming community as well as provide healthy and delicious food.”
