In the one-woman comedy The Unexpected 3rd, now playing at People’s Light Theatre in Malvern, 78-year-old Kathryn Grody reflects on her life and career, much of it closely intertwined with that of her husband, Mandy Patinkin, writes Gene Terruso for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Grody captivates the audience with her tales of youthful rebellion and midlife road bumps, while the quirks of aging elicit laughter and prompt viewers to reflect on their own journeys.
The show is filled with amusing anecdotes, each feeling authentic and immediate. The occasional moments of loss feel just as authentic but also demonstrate a resilient newfound wisdom.
The actress uses physical comedy, dancing, and singing, along with whimsical pushups throughout the play that ignores any usual structure.
And while it is not a political show, Grody alludes to challenges those aging in today’s world have to face, and bemoans school shootings and 2-year-olds with iPads.
Still, her message is undeniably that of joy.
“We are lucky to be so many people in one lifetime,” she declares.
The show will run through Oct. 28 at People’s Light Theatre.
