The event focused on native plants, which have helped boost nursery sales following a decline in gardening enthusiasm that was caused by the 2020 pandemic lockdowns.

Vanessa Finney, the executive director of the Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association, noted that the popularity of native plants is most likely more than just a trend.

“I think it’s here to stay,” she said.

Native plants support local ecosystems and pollinators and represent a landscaping choice that is both beautiful and environmentally responsible. Meanwhile, non-native species often have not been around long enough for insects to adapt to them, and can also spread rapidly due to their lack of natural predators.

In addition to native species, panelists highlighted several plant trends, including small flowering trees, tall narrow hedges, and succulent houseplants. Bright colors have also been gaining popularity, as consumers use eye-catching patterns to express their personal style.

“We’re all designers now,” said Larry Shehan, the vice chairman of the Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association
