As summer heat arrives, nothing beats cooling off with delicious ice cream or gelato, and Kennett Square‘s La Michoacana offers some of the best in the region, write Jenn Ladd, Michael Klein, Craig LaBan, and Kiki Aranita for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
La Michoacana first opened in 2003, offering the sizable local Latino population a hit of nostalgia while introducing the town’s residents to traditional Mexican flavors, including best-sellers like corn, avocado, guava and cheese, tamarind, and mamey.
The seasonal State Street scoop shop features more unusual offerings, including savory queso fresco ice cream and mushroom ice cream bars, honoring Kennett Square’s top crop.
For those who prefer less daring flavors – including chocolate peanut butter, strawberry and cream, Nutella, and rice pudding – the shop has over 100 flavors, with 38 ice creams and six sorbets available on tap each day.
Owned by Noelia Scharon, Juvenal Gonzalez, and Manuel and Martha Rodriguez, La Michoacana operates from March through October. Its signature flavors are also available year-round at sister establishment Michoacana Grill, also located in Kennett Square.
Additional items including ice cream cups and paletas can be found at other Mexican markets throughout the region.
