When she is not up in the skies, Birchrunville’s Erin Mariah Murphy, a first officer with United Airlines, focuses most of her free time on pet adoption advocacy, writes Courtney Diener Stokes for The Daily Local News.
Murphy, who is welcomed by her two rescues – Zeke, a boxer mix, and Dexter, an Australian cattle mix – when she returns to her Chester County home, volunteers with the Brandywine Valley SPCA, Wings of Rescue, and Pilots N Paws. This has helped her maintain a fulfilling work-life balance and keeps her wellness in check.
“It enables me to exercise another part of my brain outside of being a pilot,” said Murphy. “It heightens my sense of well-being and I feel more balanced.”
Murphy credits her dogs with keeping her more connected to the natural world and inspiring her to take better care of herself.
“I take care of myself to ensure I’m there for them,” she said.
While grounded during the pandemic, Murphy authored two picture books, Halfway Home and Daring Dexter. Both storylines center on Maeve, a female pilot, pet adoption, and the role of aviation in animal rescue.
