Mike Madaio’s new book, A History of Philadelphia Sandwiches; Steaks, Hoagies, Iconic Eateries & More, explores the rich and flavorful history of the city’s most iconic sandwiches and the people behind them, writes Leigh Green for PA Eats.
During his research into Philadelphia’s century-long sandwich history, Madaio uncovered countless fascinating facts that took the book in unexpected and fascinating directions.
Through his artful storytelling and meticulous research, he has crafted a lively and captivating narrative introducing readers to generations of food makers, iconic eateries, and the people who love them.
“My goal was to add color,” said the author. “Why is this place known for sandwiches when other places are known for other things?”
While some of the sandwiches in the book are well known for their association with the city, like cheesesteaks, hoagies, and roast pork, others are less known but just as important to the city’s food lore, like the combo, a hot dog with a fish cake mashed on top.
“I’d heard of it before, but I didn’t know much about it,” said Madaio. “I thought it would be more of a side note in the book, but then I realized there’s a lot there.”
