Kennett Square Borough’s Rapid Growth and Development is Both a Gift and a Challenge

Kennett Square is a thriving hub of diversity, community spirits, and business, but as the borough grows, so does local concern.

Kennett Square Borough, which totals a little more than one square mile, is known as a thriving small town of businesses, families, and nature, writes Richard L. Gaw for the Chester County Press

Once a sleepy town, Kennett Square has long been a lively town, rapidly growing in population. The borough has become a hub of hope for the local Hispanic population, a stepping stone for young adults just starting their career, and is full of fun events and nature paths for growing families.

The population has grown from 6,000 to 7,000 since 2020. Due to this, the borough has seen a multitude of housing developments, including condominiums, apartments, and single-family homes.

The Kennett Township Board of Directors approved final land development plans for the construction of a 16.1-acre residential and commercial project. It involves seven single-family units, 72 multi-family attached dwellings, 104 apartments, three detached garages, and two commercial/retail spaces.

The worry is how the development will affect current residents, and how Kennett Square can sustainably grow, while keeping its identity.

In 2022, the borough’s per capita income was $43,677. The new construction has been accused of catering to a different social class, effectively pushing out current residents.

In a survey, the maximum affordable monthly rent for English-speaking respondents was $1,250 -$2,000. For Spanish-speaking respondents, the affordable monthly rent was $600 – $1,000.
