Several multiple-area trails in the Philadelphia region, including Chester Valley Trail, recently received a joint infusion of $200 million in government money, writes Frank Kummer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The money was approved for distribution to Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission in July as part of an annual process. This year, it includes a new source of money from the Carbon Reduction Program aimed at reducing transportation emissions.
According to Josh Maxwell, chair of the Chester County Board of Commissioners, the funds will make it possible to grow Chester Valley Trail, currently 18.6 miles, by extending it along an old rail line from the Whitford Bridge to the Trestle Bridge in Downingtown.
As part of the Circuit Trails, when it is completed, Chester Valley Trail will allow users to go from Philadelphia to Lancaster County using other Circuit Trail connections.
“When complete, the Chester County trail system will serve as a highway for pedestrians and cyclists,” said Maxwell.
Funds for the Chester Valley Trail: Phase I project will cover the construction of the first phase of a planned seven-mile trail that will connect West Whiteland, East Bradford, and East Caln Townships.
